MOST ROMANTIC PROPOSAL CONTEST: KARA & MICHAEL “CANDLES IN THE SNOW” 02.15.11
My boyfriend of 11 months proposed to me on February 7, 2011 at 10:15pm. He told me to hurry to his house after I had finished college class. Once I arrived, he met me at the door and escorted me to his truck. We drove to a nearby town, Grand Haven, MI. There is a huge hill, just off the main road in Grand Haven. When you are standing on top of this hill, you can see for miles. He guided me up the hill and told me to close my eyes. He took me to the edge of the hill and instructed me to open my eyes. As soon as I opened my eyes, I saw the words “MARRY ME?” written in luminary candles in the snow.

He then got down on one knee and expressed his love to me, he then asked me to marry him. Of course I said yes. He then turned around and yelled out into the darkness while raising his hands to the sky, “She said yes!” I then heard horns blowing and people yelling from down below. He had invited all of our friends and our family, pretty much everyone who had touched our lives in any way. We then drove down the hill and met up with everybody. Once we met up with everyone, he had one more idea for me. He pulled out a pair of wool socks, smiled and said “These socks are so you don’t get cold feet.” I smiled and teared up. After that was said and done, there was not a dry eye around us. My night could not have been any better. We are currently planning on getting married once I finish school. I can’t wait!

Thanks, Michael & Kara

MOST ROMANTIC PROPOSAL CONTEST: RYAN & JEFF “WHITE BOXES AT MT. SOLEDAD” 02.12.11

Jeff had been talking about going to Mt Soledad in La Jolla for weeks to see the beautiful cross, so when he planned a date I wasn’t skeptical at all. My best friend Brittany also lives in La Jolla so we decided to schedule dinner at the Cheesecake Factory with her after our date.

He woke me up April 25, 2010 with a beautiful “I love you” phone call and told me to get ready for church and brunch with his parents. He also told me that he wanted to be at Mt Soledad for sunset so bring some warm clothes. We had a beautiful morning and decided to drive out to La Jolla. Jeff and I spent the next few hours hand in hand just being our selves, taking silly pictures, shopping and eating ice cream (my FAVORITE!)

At 4:00 Jeff said we should head up to Mt Soledad. So we were driving up there and he pulled around the back of the monument. I got out of the truck and he directed me up the hill. There was a group of men on my right doing a Bible study and snapping pictures. I saw a few men walking around taking pictures of the beautiful scenery. I was shocked at the amount of people that were there doing the same thing we were. As I turned the corner to face the cross Jeff held me back, grabbed my hand, kissed my forehead and told me he loved me. I melted, like I always do when he kissed my forehead and kept walking. I turn the corner and I saw the massive staircase covered in Gerber daisies and these white boxes wrapped like presents with pink bows on them scattered all over the stairs. I looked up at him and he handed me a pair of pink scissors and said” There are 10 numbered boxes; all of them are for you. Start at 1, read the tag and open the boxes until you get to 10, I love you.”

It all happened so fast I didn’t even have time to realize what was happening. So I began.

I came to box #1 and it said, “I love that you would rather be in PJ’s than high heels.” And inside the box was a new pair of the coziest pajamas I had ever felt. Box #2, “I love that you are going to give us a beautiful family.” Inside it had a picture of me and my Preschool students” Box #3, “I love that you protect our relationship.” Inside it had a bright pink Masterlock with one key. Box #4, “I love that you are my girly girl.” Inside it had pink nail polish and my favorite mascara. Box #5, “I love that you will make our home beautiful.” Inside it had a wall plaque that said “Always kiss me goodnight” a rule we promised to live by no matter what. Box #6, “I love eating with you.” It had bags of all my favorite chocolates! Box #7, “I admire your work ethic.” Inside it had a planner with a picture of the two of us on the cover. Box #8, “I cherish our lazy Sunday Movie Days.” Inside was the movie Four Christmases(we had talked about seeing it forever!). Box #9,”I love US.” Inside was a picture someone took of us in the 7th grade (before we were dating) Through all the scrambling for boxes and reading tags I stopped to kiss his cheek I think a million times and each time he encouraged me to keep opening my presents. After box #9 I had to stop and look at Jeff because I couldn’t find box #10, he pointed to the top of the staircase and I saw it and I immediately began to cry. When Jeff and I started dating I told him I wanted the next man to give me roses to be my husband. The box was surrounded with what seemed like 100 red roses. I walked ran to the top of the staircase and looked at the tag, it had the number 10 on it but the other side was blank. I opened the box and inside was a white post-it that said, “I love every single thing about you, I always have, and I always will.” There was nothing else in it. I turned around and Jeff was on one knee, he looked at me and said,”Ryan Amanda, I promise to be your lover and your best friend until the day that I die, will you marry me?” I cried and said YES!!!

After what seemed like an hour of hugging, crying together and some kissing he told me to turn around and smile. Confused, I turned around to find a photographer standing in front of us taking our picture. Jeff hired a professional photographer to capture the entire engagement on film!! I heard clapping and looked around to find tons of people standing around cheering for us. I completely forgot we were surrounded by strangers! I looked down the staircase and saw Brittany, running towards me wearing giant sunglasses and a massive hoodie. She was there the entire time!! She told me we were going to go down to the beach and take some pictures then go to dinner. We spent the next hour in our own little world taking pictures on the La Jolla Shores. Then we drove to the Cheesecake Factory. They told me we had reservations and walked to the back patio before I even had time to think. I opened the door to find my entire family, Jeff’s family and ALL of our friends waiting for us clapping. SHOCKED! The next few hours were spent calling out of town family and celebrating with the ones we love the most.

Thanks, Ryan & Jeff

MOST ROMANTIC PROPOSAL CONTEST: VALERIE & TOM “BECAUSE OF DONNY OSMOND” 02.10.11

Because of Donny Osmond and The Osmond family I met my Valentine.

Valerie grew up In Los Angeles, never married and in her forties had been a big Osmond fan since the 1960′s when as a little girl would watch the five young brothers on The Andy Williams Show.

Valerie’s parents both passed away several years ago leaving he pretty much on her own.

I grew up in a small town in Indiana (French Lick). I was one of the few guys that I knew of that loved the Osmond’s. Sure I was teased allot but there was something about The Osmond’s that I was drawn to. I loved their closeness as family and the way they could sing such tight harmonies.

To make a long story short, my photo was on Donny Osmond’s website in the fan site as I was trying to help raise money for The Osmond’s to them get a much deserved star on The Hollywood Walk Of Fame. Valerie saw my photo and emailed me. We wrote back and fourth for a couple of years as friends not thinking much more of it because of the distance between us. Finally in August of 2003 I flew to Hollywood California to join fans from around the world to watch The Osmond’s receive their star, and there was Valerie. My heart stopped beating. She was so beautiful and the chemistry between us was amazing. I flew back to Indiana with tears in this grown mans eyes thinking that I had finally found the love of my life, but I couldn’t stay and I couldn’t ask her to come to Indiana.

After a few days without Valerie, I called her and told her that I was willing to try a long distance relationship if she was. We traveled back and forth across America for a few months. Valerie met my Mother and Father and fell in love with them and they with her. It was like Valerie had a family again after all these years.

I knew in my heart that God had brought Valerie and me together and that God was giving me his amazing blessings to ask Valerie to be my wife. I wanted to do something special and somehow have the Osmond’s involved in my proposal, but what?

Then amazingly Valerie called and said that she was going to go watch a taping of the game show Pyramid hosted by Donny Osmond on Dec 9th because that is his birthday. It was like a switch had been turned on and I emailed Donny Osmond’s assistant. I told her the whole story about Valerie and Me. How we met thru the Osmond’s etc… I told her that I wanted to sneak out to Los Angeles and come onto the set of Pyramid without Valerie knowing and propose to her with Donny Osmond by my side.

I honestly didn’t expect a reply, BUT two day later I received a phone call from Donny’s assistant Tina. She said that Donny LOVED the idea!! The next thing I knew I am on a plane to LA without Valerie’s knowledge. When I got to the Sony Studios I was snuck under tight security so that there was no chance of Valerie seeing me. It was amazing! I was no one special yet the whole crew treated me like a famous guest. I met with my boyhood hero, Donny Osmond in his dressing, gave him a hug and thanked him for what he was doing for me and Valerie.

As the show began, Valerie was sitting in the audience. Everyone on the crew was ready and poor Valerie had no idea what was about to happen. The music began playing, the lights were flashing and Donny introduced the categories for the next game. He read them off as the boards light up. They read: WILL YOU MARRY ME VALERIE? LOVE TOM

Donny said, “Valerie is in the audience right there” as the camera panned onto Valerie she sat there stunned, then Donny said “Tom, come on out”. I walked on to the set, Valerie turned and looked in my direction and her jaw dropped to the floor! As I walked up into the audience everyone was standing, cheering and crying. Everyone but Valerie that is. She sat there with her hands in her face. I got down on one knee, told Valerie that I loved her and proposed to my sweetheart…………….. She said yes!!

We married a few months later and Valerie moved from the big city life of Los Angeles to small town life in Jasper, Indiana.

Here is the proposal as it appeared on national TV:

Thanks, Valerie & Tom

MOST ROMANTIC PROPOSAL CONTEST: GAYATHRY & ANIRUDDAH “MR. CLUTCH’S ADVENTURE” 02.09.11
I was in India for the past month with my girlfriend (Gaya) of 3.5 years. While my reasons for visiting included spending time with my grandparents, watching cricket, eating real food, and enjoying nice weather, I had an overarching purpose for going. Over the course of my vacation, I proposed to Gaya and she accepted. The story is as follows:
The first movie that Gaya and I watched together was Amelie, a french film about a shy and eccentric french girl who does good deeds for people while pursuing her love interest at the same time. As far as romantic comedies go, it’s right up there with You’ve Got Mail, Sleepless in Seattle, and When Harry Met Sally (in other words, pretty awesome – I highly recommend it). In the movie, Amelie’s father is depicted as a lonely guy who spends all his time gardening because he is depressed about the untimely death of his wife (Amelie’s mom). One of his most treasured possessions is a garden gnome, which he has used to build a shrine outside the house in memory of his wife.
Seeing how sad her dad is, Amelie steals the garden gnome one day. She photoshops the garden gnome into pictures of famous world attractions to make it seem as though the gnome has visited each of those places. She then sends these photoshopped pictures to her father, who is totally confused and starts to think that the inanimate garden gnome is somehow traveling all over the world. This confusion eventually inspires the father to get out of his funk and travel himself.
Anyway, I borrowed the garden gnome concept for the proposal. A few weeks before we left for India, I rewatched Amelie with Gaya to make sure the movie was fresh in her mind. Then I stole a stuffed toy that she owns (a bear called Mr. Clutch, the first gift I gave her) and had him photoshopped into pictures of various places we were going to visit on our trip (my friend Ajaya helped with this part). I used these pictures to make postcards addressed from Mr. Clutch and slipped them to Gaya one by one over the course of the trip. I timed the postcard deliveries to make it seem as though the bear was always one step ahead of us.
The list of postcards (major places we visited) in chronological order is as follows: Gateway of India (Mumbai), Pune (city where I was born), Allepey Backwaters (Kerala), Kanyakumari (Southernmost tip of India in Tamil Nadu), Meenakshi Temple (Tamil Nadu), Rameshwaram (Pamban Island, Tamil Nadu), and Dhanushkodi (tip of Pamban Island, Tamil Nadu). Dhanushkodi is of special importance to us because it is the closest point in India to Sri Lanka, which is where Gaya is from. It also holds important Hindu mythological significance as it is the location where King Rama (avatar of Vishnu) built a bridge to Sri Lanka to rescue his wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana. Here’s some more detail: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dhanushkodi
Dhanushkodi is one of the craziest and most remote places I’ve ever visited. It is a narrow strip of sand surrounded by the Bay of Bengal on one side and the Indian Ocean on the other. We rented a jeep that took us to the very tip of the peninsula, which was no more than a few feet wide. Other than the jeep driver and a group of 5 people a few hundred feet away, we were the only people there. It literally felt as though we were standing on the ocean. Once we got there, we found pawprints leading to Mr. Clutch (my parents helped with this part). Gaya picked up the bear in surprise and I asked her to check if he was ok.
When I first gave her the bear over three years ago, I had added a recorded sound in its paw that went off when you pressed it. After I stole the bear from her, I switched this sound to the other paw and put a second recorded sound with the proposal into the original paw. When Gaya picked up the bear at Dhanushkodi and pressed its hand to see if the sound still worked properly, she was surprised to hear me proposing to her instead. At that point I dropped to one knee and opened the box containing the ring.
Everything beyond that is just a blur of happiness and joy. We hugged and kissed each other, at a loss for words, simply soaking in the moment the best we could.
Some random/funny notes:
1) Gaya was so surprised when I got down on my knee that instead of saying “yes”, she said “I do”. From that point on, “I do” became an inside joke for the rest of the vacation.
2) Allegedly, one of the same rocks that was used to build Rama’s bridge is preserved in a small hut-like temple on Pamban Island. It’s a big porous rock that floats in water that we had the chance to touch and take pictures of.
3) My friend Tsung-Han had given me a cuban cigar a while back. To celebrate the success of my proposal, I lit it up right on the beach, Red Auerbach style.
Thanks, Gayathry & Aniruddha

MOST ROMANTIC PROPOSAL CONTEST: ALEXANDRA & JOSH “THE PUPPY” 02.08.11

The week prior to Josh proposing, he had been acting very distant and strange.  He wouldn’t let Alex come over to his house, and he wouldn’t come over to her house to see her.  He told her that he was having family problems, and that they could get together at the end of the week for dinner and talk about it.

On Friday, November 13th, 2009 Josh took Alex out to dinner at Islands in Poway.  This was a restaurant that they go to often, so she didn’t think anything of it.  Once they sat down, she asked him to tell her what was going on.  He told her that he wanted to talk after they ate because it was giving him an upset stomach to think about it.  So she waited to ask again until after they had paid the bill.

All of a sudden the hostess put a large white cardboard box with a lid and a bow on the table.  The lid started to move and Josh told Alex to open the box.  When she took the lid off, a little brindle boxer puppy stuck her head out.  Alex was so excited!  She yelled out “Oh my gosh, you got me a puppy!”.  He then said “That’s not all.  You need to look at the name tag.”  Alex turned the little pink heart name tag over and it had “Will You Marry Me” inscribed on it.

Alex looked over and Josh was on one knee holding the ring in his hands.  He was so nervous that half the time he was asking her to marry him; he had the ring facing him.  Alex shook her head yes and gave him a huge hug and kiss.  The entire restaurant started clapping.  Alex looked at the ring and looked at him and said ”and I get a puppy too!” :)

It turns out that Josh’s had had the puppy (Bella Rose) at his house for an entire week and that was why he wouldn’t let Alex come over or leave his house.  He was so sneaky :)

Thanks, Alexandra & Josh
